PHOENIX -- The Sandra Day O’Connor Institute for American Democracy is teaming up with the National Constitution Center and the Organization of American Historians to host a weeklong workshop dedicated to enhancing the understanding of the U.S. Constitution among secondary school educators. Set to occur in Philadelphia, this event is tailored for social studies teachers currently instructing students in grades 6 to 12, who are eager to deepen their knowledge of constitutional history.

The demand for quality professional development that boosts educators' confidence and effectiveness in teaching this crucial subject is more urgent than ever."
Sarah Suggs, President and CEO of the O’Connor Institute, echoed the sentiment, remarking, "Justice O’Connor would truly value this exceptional opportunity for educators. As she famously noted, understanding our Constitution is essential for every citizen. We aim for participants to return to their classrooms invigorated and equipped to inspire their students concerning our nation’s foundational document."
The seminar, led by distinguished scholars including David W. Blight, President of the Organization of American Historians, and Akhil Amar from Yale Law School, will explore the historical context, creation, and evolution of the U.S. Constitution. Blight added, “This seminar will provide an in-depth examination of the Constitution's origins, amendments, and its transformative journey during the Civil War and Reconstruction. Our goal is to enrich both the intellectual and teaching skills of secondary educators."
Scheduled from Sunday, June 22, to Friday, June 27, the intensive will be held at the National Constitution Center on Independence Mall. Participants can look forward to engaging panel discussions, expert-led deep dives into constitutional drafting, and guided explorations of Philadelphia’s historical sites and cultural institutions.
